What is qigong?

Qigong (pronounced “chee-gong”) is a gentle practice for less stress and more energy. It is an ancient Chinese wellness system that combines slow, flowing movements with deep breathing and a focused mind.

Unlike high-impact workouts that can leave you feeling drained, Qigong is designed to recharge your batteries. It is often called "moving meditation" because it helps calm a racing mind while you move your body.

Why Practice Qigong?

You don't need any special equipment, expensive gear, or previous experience to start. It is a practical tool you can use every day to:

  • Ease Stress and Anxiety: The slow movements and deep breaths signal your body to switch from "fight-or-flight" to "rest-and-digest" mode.
  • Relieve Aches and Pains: Gentle stretching helps loosen tight muscles and stiff joints, especially in the neck, shoulders, and back.
  • Improve Balance and Strength: Even though the movements are soft, they help you feel more stable on your feet and build internal strength.
  • Boost Your Energy: By clearing out "stuck" energy, you’ll likely find you have more focus and vitality for your work and family.

Is it Right for Me?

If you can breathe, you can do Qigong.

For Beginners

You don't need to be flexible or "get it right" immediately. We start with simple, repetitive movements that are easy to follow.

For All Bodies

All exercises can be modified. If standing for a long time is difficult, you can follow the entire class while sitting comfortably in a chair.

For Busy Schedules

Even 10–15 minutes of practice can make a noticeable difference in how you feel for the rest of the day.

The benefits of Qigong

What to Expect: Our Class Structure

Every class is designed to be low-stress and easy to follow. We typically spend 45 to 60 minutes together:

Gentle Warm-up (10–15 mins): We start with light movements like shoulder rolls, neck stretches, and "swinging arms" to release the day's tension and wake up your circulation.

The Main Flow (25–30 mins): We move through simple, repetitive Qigong forms (like the "Eight Pieces of Brocade") that focus on deep breathing and balance.

Mindful Closing (5–10 mins): We end with a short relaxation or "collecting energy" exercise to leave you feeling calm, focused, and ready for the rest of your day.

What to Wear and Bring

You don’t need any fancy gym gear or expensive equipment to join us.

  • Clothing: Wear anything loose and comfortable that doesn’t restrict your movement. A regular T-shirt and sweatpants or loose trousers are perfect. We recommend natural fabrics like cotton if you have them, as they help you stay cool and comfortable.
  • Footwear: Most students practice in socks, barefoot, or thin-soled flat shoes (like simple canvas sneakers). The goal is to feel "grounded" and stable.
  • Layers: If it’s chilly, bring a light sweater or jacket you can easily peel off once you start moving.
Water: Feel free to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.

A quick tip for your first class: It’s best to avoid eating a heavy meal right before we start—a light snack 30–60 minutes before class usually feels best.

Movement for a Lifetime: Meet Lauren Wilensky

I have spent many years exploring how the body moves and heals. My journey now isn’t about "quick fixes" or temporary trends; it is a lifelong commitment to movement as a foundation for lasting vitality.

My Movement Background

With over six years of deep immersion in Qigong, I am currently finalizing my formal accreditation to round out a rich history in:

  • Tai Chi: Cultivating balance and internal strength.
  • Nia Dance: Finding joy and expression through rhythm.
  • Expressive Movement: Connecting the physical body with emotional release.

Why Qigong?

While my background is diverse, Qigong is where I find the most profound impact on systemic health. Unlike high-impact exercises that can wear the body down, Qigong is a "meditation in motion" that grows with you. It is a practice designed to ensure you remain mobile, calm, and energised well into your later years.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that wellness should be accessible to everyone in our community, regardless of their starting point.

  • Long-Term Change: Shifting from "fixing" a symptom to supporting your entire system.
  • Accessibility: Gentle, effective movements that can be adapted for any age or fitness level.
  • Sustainable Vitality: Building a practice today that serves you for decades to come.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to be in good shape to start?

Not at all. Qigong is for every body. If you can move your arms and breathe, you can do this. All exercises can be done standing or sitting in a chair, and we always encourage you to "listen to your body" and move at your own pace.

Is it like Yoga or Tai Chi?

It’s a cousin to both. Like Yoga, we focus on breath and movement, but there are no difficult "pretzel" poses. Like Tai Chi, the movements are slow and flowing, but Qigong is much easier to learn because the movements are simpler and repetitive.

Do I have to "believe" in anything special?

No. While Qigong has roots in ancient philosophy, you don’t need to change your personal or religious beliefs to benefit from it. Think of it like "physical therapy for your energy"—it’s a practical tool for health and stress relief.

What if I can’t make it every week?

Life happens! While regular practice helps you see results faster, every single session is beneficial. You don't have to "catch up" if you miss a class—just join us when you can.

Will I feel anything right away?

Most people feel a sense of relaxation or a "pleasant tingling" (that's your circulation waking up!) during their very first class. The more you practice, the more you’ll notice improvements in your sleep, mood, and daily energy.

Is it safe if I have a medical condition?

Qigong is very safe and low-impact. However, if you have a specific injury, are pregnant, or have a chronic health condition, we always recommend checking with your doctor first to make sure gentle movement is right for you.
